In this striking portrait Ekberg juxtaposes an interplay of warm and cool patterned fabrics with an austere seated male figure, his concentrated gaze turned away from the viewer. The rendering of a pair of tattoos on the left arm suggests the subject is a sailor, whose dignity and stature is captured in a raw physicality. The impression of monumental form is conveyed by the unusual perspective and the thickly rendered green drapery drawn creating a sense that the figure is resting on a rock-like plinth. This painting reflects Ekberg's skill in blending traditional portraiture techniques with a bold, modern palette.

Ekberg formally trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1912 to 1916. After completing his studies he participated in group exhibitions, notably the "Februarigruppen" at Liljevalchs Konsthall, and showcased his work with the Swedish General Art Association.
